Find information about Illinois Wesleyan University agricultural technology, registering in a technical degree program, and taking free practice tests online. Engineering is one of the fastest-growing employment areas, for several strong reasons. As technical progress permeates industrial processes in manufacturing, food technology and agriculture, engineers are increasingly in demand. If you complete the agricultural technology program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations that may appeal to you such as crop and soil science, agribusiness, or hydroponic production methods. Further, due to advances in agricultural science, there is a growing shortage of biotech graduates, and of skilled agricultural engineers in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Illinois Wesleyan University.

Agricultural technology, and crop science in general, includes traditional cross-breeding techniques, trait selection, and genetic engineering in some cases. Biotech crops can make farming more profitable by increasing crop quality and may in some cases increase crop yields. According to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), biotechnology crops as a percentage of total crop plantings in the USA were about 88 percent for corn, 94 percent for cotton, and 93 percent for soybeans. Herbicide-tolerant crops are particularly compatible with commercial agriculture systems that help preserve topsoil from erosion.

USDA researchers seek to solve major agricultural problems and to better understand the basic plant biology relating to agricultural technology. This includes introducing new or improved traits in plants, animals, and microorganisms and creating new biotechnology-based products such as more effective diagnostic tests, improved farm animal vaccines, and better antibiotics. The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts research on the economic aspects of the use of genetically engineered plants, including the rate of adoption of agricultural technology by farmers.

Architectural Design

As the complexity of buildings has increased, the field of architecture has become multi-disciplinary, with specializations for each project type. In addition, there has been an increased differentiation of the design architect from the project architect who ensures that a given construction project meets required standards. The preparatory processes in the design of any large building have become quite complicated, and may require preliminary studies of such matters as durability, sustainability, and compliance with local building codes.

A recent shift in architectural thought has prompted architecture schools to focus more on the environment. Sustainability in architecture was pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright, Buckminster Fuller, and by green architects such as Ian McHarg and Sim Van der Ryn. Concepts include passive solar building design, greener roof designs, biodegradable materials, and more attention to a structure's energy usage.

Engineering Job Listings

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.
